FLYERS ACE IRISH FOR INVITATIONAL TITLE

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 20 Dayton volleyball captured the 2010 Notre Dame Invitational title after sweeping Notre Dame in three sets on Sunday afternoon at the Purcell Pavilion (25-12, 25-21, 25-21).

Senior middle blocker Lindsay Fletemier was named tournament MVP, as sophomore libero Paige Vargas and senior middle blocker Becky Novacek joined their teammate on the all-tournament team.

But it was freshman Allyson Morey who set the tone to lift the Flyers to the Invitational title on Sunday after recording four straight aces to give Dayton an early 6-1 advantage in the first set. With the momentum of a five-point lead at its back, the Flyers won the first set 25-12.

“Ally set the tone for the entire match,” Head Coach Kelly Sheffield. “She was serving bullets back there and it really set the tone. She was great and I thought our entire defense in the back row was really solid today.”

With six kills and six digs sophomore Rachel Krabacher helped the Flyers to a narrow 21-25 set two win which featured 12 ties and four lead changes. In the third set, Dayton held the Fighting Irish to .067 hitting percentage and hit .357 to ensure the Notre Dame Invitational title 25-20.

Fletemier ended the Invitational with seven kills and five blocks against Notre Dame on Sunday and a totaled 37 kills and 22 blocks (2.0 per set) in three wins on the weekend. Novacek paced the Flyers in kills on Sunday with nine, adding four blocks. For the weekend, Vargas led the Flyers with 42 digs to guide UD to a team .266 hitting percentage and a total of just seven reception errors. Dayton forced its opponents to 18 reception errors on the weekend.

Dayton begins Atlatnic 10 Conference played next weekend with trips to Saint Louis on Friday and Duquesne on Sunday.
