FLYERS EARN FIFTH CONSECUTIVE AVCA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD

AVCA.org Release

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
University of Dayton volleyball finished the 2011-12 academic year with a 3.50 cumulative team grade point average to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive year.

A record 533 teams (102 NCAA Division I Women) earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, but Dayton is one of just 11 teams to earn the award and finish the 2011 season ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll. The Atlantic 10 Conference was represented by six teams with awards this year, up from just two last year.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

The UDVB program has maintained at least a 3.30 GPA since the 2007-08 academic year to bring home the award five consecutive years, including all four years under Head Coach Kelly Sheffield’s leadership.

Dayton ended the 2011 season with a 25-7 record, three AVCA All-Americans, and the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles for the third consecutive season.

The 2012 season begins on Aug. 24, as the Flyers host national runner-up Illinois at the Frericks Center during the Flyer Classic.
