Flyers Make Fifth Consecutive NCAA Championship Appearance
Dayton will make its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship on Thursday against Kentucky … It is UD’s eighth appearance in the last nine seasons … Dayton earned the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid as three-peat regular season and tournament champions … The Flyers hold a 4-7 all-time record in the tournament and have advanced to the second round in back-to-back seasons … Head Coach Kelly Sheffield has taken the Flyers to the tournament in all of his four seasons at Dayton.
Lexington Region
The College Station First & Second Rounds are in the Lexington Region … It will be the first time an NCAA volleyball tournament match will be played at Reed Arena … No. 1 Texas is the top-seeded team in the Lexington Region, while No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 9 UCLA and No. 8 Penn State round out the seeded teams in the region … Dayton hosted a regional last season at UD Arena … The Flyers have not yet advanced to the round of 16.

Kentucky (26-5) earned a seventh consecutive bid to the tournament this season – the programs’ 13th appearance overall … The Wildcats are one of three Southeastern Conference teams in the field of 64 – all three came out of the Eastern Division (Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky) … Head Coach Craig Skinner is in his seventh season in Lexington with seven trips to the NCAA tournament … The Wildcats are led by junior libero Stephanie Klefot, who claimed SEC Libero of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season … Junior Christine Hartmann and sophomore Whitney Billings joined Klefot on the All-SEC First Team … Hartmann ranks 31st in the nation in assists per set … The Wildcats finished SEC play with a 17-3 conference record … UK features wins against six tournament teams this season (Albany, Tulsa, Western Kentucky, Louisville, Florida, Tennessee) … Dayton leads the all-time series, 2-1.
Texas A&M (22-7) is making its 19th overall appearance in the tournament and its second in three years … A&M is 14-0 all-time in home NCAA tournament matches … Head Coach Laurie Corbelli is two wins away from winning her 400th match at A&M … She has a 20-14 mark during NCAA tournament play ... Outside hitter Kelsey Black, middle blocker Lindsey Miller and right-side hitter Alisia Kastmo were each named to the 2011 All-Big 12 First Team … The Aggies are one of seven teams from the Big 12 in the field of 64 … A&M is 8-6 this year against the teams in the NCAA tournament field.
Lipscomb (20-10) head coach Brandon Rosenthal has led the Lady Bisons to three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four seasons … The Lady Bisons represent the Atlantic Sun Conference’s automatic bid after winning its tournament title … Senior middle blocker Katie Rose was named the A-Sun co-Player of the Year … Rose ranks in the top 10 in the A-Sun in hitting percentage, kills per set and blocks per set … Junior outside hitter Kaycee Green was selected first-team all-conference … Last season Lipscomb play in Dayton during the NCAA first round, losing to Ohio State, 3-1.
Last Time Out
Dayton swept Notre Dame to conclude the regular season at Frericks Center last Friday … UD has defeated Notre Dame in 2010 and 2011 … With the win, Dayton improved to 19-1 against teams from its AVCA Region (Northeast) … Senior Yvonne Marten led the Flyers with 18 kills and 10 digs for her third consecutive double-double and eighth overall of the season … Setter Samantha Selsky had 45 assists – a season high for a three-set match.
Three-Peat Champions
Dayton captured its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title (7th overall) by sweeping Duquense in the Semifinals and defeating second-seeded Xavier in four sets in the Finals … It is Dayton’s third consecutive A-10 tournament title … 2011 was also UD’s third consecutive regular season crown after finishing 14-1 in league play … Senior Yvonne Marten was the A-10 Championship’s Most Outstanding Player … Marten joined junior Rachel Krabacher, junior Samantha Selsky and sophomore Megan Campbell on the All-Championship Team.
Sheffield Named A-10 Coach of the Year, Six On All-Conference Teams
A record six players were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, led by Player of the Year Rachel Krabacher, Setter of the Year Samantha Selsky and Coach of the Year Kelly Sheffield ... Sophomore middle blocker Megan Campbell joined Krabacher and Selsky as First Team All-Conference selections … Senior outside hitter Yvonne Marten and junior libero Paige Vargas were Second Team selections … Freshman middle Isolde Hannan was listed on the All-Rookie Team … Dayton has had the A-10 Player of the Year three consecutive seasons and the Coach of the Year two consecutive seasons.
Vargas Moving Up In Career Digs
Junior libero Paige Vargas is poised to move into second place in career digs at Dayton this weekend – entering tournament play with 1,437 career digs … She currently ranks third in career digs and needs 10 to pass Cindy Moffitt (1987-90) … Vargas became the 11th Flyer in program history to pass the 1,000-dig mark after recording 16 digs against Houston on Sept. 2 … The Naperville, Ill., native recorded a career-high 35 digs this season at Green Bay (8/27) – the most since she recorded 31 against Xavier on Nov. 22, 2009 … Dayton’s career digs record is held by Adrienne Green (2004-07) with 2,070.

Krabacher Closing In On 1,000 Kills
Junior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher – the 2011 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year – enters tournament play with 980 kills … The Cincinnati native needs 20 to become the 20th Flyer to reach the 1,000-career kill mark … Her career-high 480 kills this season is the seventh most in a single-season by a Dayton player … Krabacher leads the A-10 in kills per set and points per set this season.
Campbell Re-Writing Records
Sophomore Megan Campbell ranks second in single-season block-assists at Dayton with 143 … Just last season, Lindsay Fletemier set the block-assists record with 155 … Campbell is also second in single-season hitting percentage at Dayton (.416), behind Faye Barhorst (.431) from 2006 … Campbell has the fourth-best hitting percentage in the nation … In her second season with the Flyers, the Versailles, Ohio native has a .385 career hitting percentage mark – a program-high.
Sheffield Wins 100th At Dayton
Fourth-year Head Coach Kelly Sheffield won his 100th match as UD’s head coach on Nov. 11 at La Salle … Sheffield became the fastest coach to reach 100 wins at Dayton, needing just 127 matches … He is also the first coach in Dayton history to reach 100 wins in less than four seasons … Sheffield averaged 26 wins per season in his first three seasons at UD … Last season Sheffield won his 200th career match at the Notre Dame Invitational against Santa Clara on Sept. 17, 2010 ... Sheffield spent seven years building the program at Albany, compiling 142 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Sheffield is the 2011 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year … In 2010, Sheffield was the AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year and A-10 Co-Coach of the Year.
Three Named Academic All-District
Sophomore Megan Campbell (First Team), senior Yvonne Marten (First Team) and junior Rachel Krabacher (Second Team) were named Capital One Academic All-District 5, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America … First Team Academic All‐District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America® Team ballot … Last season Marten and graduated senior Becky Novacek were All-District honorees, becoming the first representatives from UD since 2004 to be voted as such.
In The National Rankings
UD earned 29 points (positioned at No. 29) in the most recent AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll – the 45th consecutive week UD has been receiving votes … There was no AVCA top 25 during the first week of the NCAA tournament … Five of UD’s six losses were against teams which are currently ranked … Dayton was ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll … In the NCAA RPI, the Flyers are ranked No. 39.
Dayton's former streak of 22 consecutive weeks in the top 25 began on Nov. 23, 2009, ranked 24th and ended on Sept. 5 ... The Flyers’ highest position in the AVCA poll is No. 12, which came on the weeks of Oct. 15, 2007 and Nov. 22, 2010 ...
