DAYTON SPLITS AGAINST RHODE ISLAND

Game One Box | Game Two Box

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton softball team (13-18, 1-5 A-10) split with the Rhode Island Rams (10-15, 2-2 A-10). The Flyers beat the Rams 6-1 in game one and lost game two 4-2.

Senior Brandy Brown was 3-for-6 with a double. Redshirt freshman Jordan Jennings was also 3-for-6 and had two RBI. Freshman Tiffany Ricks as well as seniors Courtney Kutsulis and Lauren Nacke each had a home run.

Freshman Kayla English (4-5) earned the win in game one. English had six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. She issued two walks and allowed one earned run. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson (2-7) was dealt the loss in game two. Isaacson pitched three innings and had two strikeouts while allowing four earned runs. English pitched two innings of relief and had one strikeout. Senior Sarah Wedel pitched one inning and had a strikeout.

Dayton opened the scoring in game one with a solo home run by Nacke in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Jennings drove home Brown after Brown’s leadoff double to right center to extend UD’s lead to 2-0.

The Flyers tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Ricks uncorked a pinch-hit home run to leadoff the inning. Later in the inning sophomore Rachel Archer hit a double to centerfield scoring sophomore Jenna Lopes.

Vazquez singled home Nacke in the sixth inning and Jennings brought home sophomore Kathleen Maloof in the seventh.

Rhode Island scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Nicole Massoni.

Rhody got on the board in game two on an RBI double by Massoni and a fielder’s choice.
The Rams extended its lead to four in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double by Alison Hartzell and an RBI single by Stacey Fox.

Dayton made a late charge in the top of the seventh inning on Kutsulis’ two-run home run, but the Flyers could not complete the comeback falling 4-2 to the Rams.

The Flyers travel to Morehead, Ky. for a doubleheader against the Morehead State Eagles on Wednesday, April 4 beginning at 3 p.m.
