FLYERS SWEEP AKRON IN DOUBLEHEADER

DAYTON, Ohio
– The University of Dayton softball team (12-15) swept the Akron Zips (11-13) on Sunday. Dayton beat Akron 3-1 in game one and 2-1 in game two.

Senior Brandy Brown had three RBI on the day and was 3-for-6 at the plate. Brown also doubled for the Flyers. Senior Megan Barrett was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a double. Junior transfer Leah sitter had three stolen bases. Sophomore Dana Trotta drove home the eventual game-winning run in game two.

Freshman Kayla English pitched a complete game in the series opener. English struck out six while allowing one earned run. Sophomore Alysha Isaacson also pitched a complete game. Isaacson had one strikeout and allowed one earned run. Neither pitcher issued a walk on Sunday.

Dayton opened game one with three runs in the first inning. Brown doubled to bring home freshman Natalie Mariano and sophomore Rachel Archer. Barrett brought home Brown to put UD ahead 3-0.

Akron’s Alissa Birkhimer drove home the Zips’ only run in the first game, when she singled up the middle to score Alex Helfrich.

UD opened the scoring again in game two on a base hit up the middle by Brown in the first frame. An RBI-double by Taryn Allmon knotted the game at one apiece in the fifth inning.

Trotta drove home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right field, for the Flyers to complete the sweep.

Dayton takes its two-game winning streak on the road when they face UMass and Rhode Island March 30-April 1.
