The University of Dayton’s Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes held its fifth annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Reception Monday evening at the Kennedy Union Ballroom on campus. A total of 175 student-athletes were honored for academic achievement in the last calendar year, and the top awards for student-athletes were presented.
In addition, Dr. Deborah Bickford, UD’s Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Learning Initiatives, announced to the crowd that for the first time in school history, every athletic team carried a combined cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better.
The 2011 Presidential Scholar-Athlete Awards went to women’s soccer player Kelly Blumenschein and men’s golfer Christopher Woeste.
The Presidential Scholar Athlete Award is designed to be the most prestigious award presented at the annual OASSA Scholar-Athlete Awards Reception. It recognizes two student-athletes, one male and one female, who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership, and service to the University of Dayton community.
Blumenschein is a three-time All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection. A double major in marketing and entrepreneurship with a minor in Spanish, she carries a 3.72 GPA. She was a 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Top 30 finalist and was also three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District. The Beavercreek High School grad was one of 11 players named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and was second team academic all-region. A two-year co-captain and a four-year starter, Blumenschein is UD’s representative on the A-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Woeste is one of the most decorated men’s golfers in the Flyer program’s history. Woeste was named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, becoming just the eighth Flyer to earn All-Academic Team honors. A two-year team captain, Woeste earned the 2008 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection. The Centerville native and Alter High School graduate carries a 3.93 GPA in Pre-Physical Therapy.
Also recognized at the banquet were the other 14 Presidential Scholar-Athlete nominees: Clara Ang (women’s golf), Ashley Cattran (track & field), Elizabeth Coorey (women’s cross country), Loni Dickerhoof (women’s tennis), Luke Fabrizius (men’s basketball), Michael Koscielski (men’s tennis), Matt Lemon (men’s cross country), Alicia Nichols (softball), Becky Novacek (volleyball), Erin Quinn (rowing), Justine Raterman (women’s basketball), Jimmy Roesinger (baseball), Tommy Watkins (men’s soccer) and Brandon Wingeier (football).
Three other major awards were presented. The Athletics Citizenship Award went to softball player Alicia Nichols. Football player Brandon Wingeier earned the Charles R. Kendall Award for excellent academic and athletic achievements. Women’s basketball player Justine Raterman was presented the Ann E. Meyers Award for achievement in academic and athletic effort by a women’s basketball or volleyball player.
The OASSA Academic Cup, which goes to the Flyer team with the highest combined GPA, was awarded to the Flyer women’s cross country team. Coach Sarah Hinkle’s squad boasts a 3.53 grade point average.
The UD All-Academic Team, whose membership includes the student-athlete on each team with the highest GPA on the team, was announced. It consists of Cheryl Ang (women’s golf), Kelly Blumenschein (women’s soccer), Matt Brockberg (football), Ashley Cattran (track & field), Kari Daugherty (women’s basketball), Loni Dickerhoof (women’s tennis), Nate Dombrowski (men’s soccer), Luke Fabrizius (men’s basketball), Bryce Lahrman (baseball), Stephen Mackell (men’s cross country), Kathleen Maloof (softball), Becky Novacek (volleyball), Erin Quinn (rowing), Joe West (men’s tennis), Christopher Woeste (men’s golf) and Emily Zimmerman (women’s cross country).
In addition, the 25 Flyer student-athletes who earned 4.0 GPA’s were recognized, as were the 175 who had grade point averages of 3.50 or better.
