SIRMANS LATE GOAL LIFTS FLYERS PAST BEARCATS, 2-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

Sept. 4, 2005

DAYTON - Sophomore Country Sirmans headed in a restart from senior Katie Lowstuter with less than two minutes remaining as the University of Dayton women's soccer team rallied to beat the University of Cincinnati, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. With the win, the Flyers (3-1-0) were crowned champions of the 2005 Nike Dayton Flyers Invitational and extended their home winning streak to 14 matches. In Sunday's first game, Furman upset No. 10 Ohio State,1-0.

Sirmans, who was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player of the Nike Dayton Flyers Invitational, also recorded an assist in the Flyers' win. UD senior Reba Sedlacek was tabbed the Invitational Offensive MVP with the game-winning goal and an assist in Friday's 2-1 win over Furman.

For the second consecutive game, the Flyers found themselves down early as UC's Andrea Haney scored just 5:17 into the match. Haney scored on the rebound after teammate Chelsea Kinsdschuh's shot was saved by UD goalkeeper Niki Reed and caromed off the post and back in front of the net.

After tying the 10th-ranked Buckeyes Friday night, 2-2, the Bearcats (1-2-1) had a second consecutive upset on their minds and were able to hold that 1-0 lead until the closing minutes of the first half. That's when UD sophomore Natalia Walters scored her first goal of the season with 2:28 on the clock. Walters took a pass from Sirmans and headed a shot past UC goalkeeper Sherry Slye from five yards out. Senior Alicija Bredlo was also credited with an assist as she started the play with a pass to Sirmans.

UD came out strong in the second half and owned an 8-2 advantage in shots in the period. But the Flyers couldn't get the go-ahead-goal past Slye until the closing minutes as Sirmans struck for her first goal in 2005. She headed in Lowstuter's restart from close range with just 1:36 left in regulation.

For the match, UD owned a 13-7 edge in shots and 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Slye made just one save for UC while Reed collected three saves for UD in the win. Sirmans led all players with three shots.

The Flyers return to action next weekend on the road at one of the nation's premier in-season invitational tournaments -- the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Friday, UD plays Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse William & Mary at 4:30 p.m. and will face No. 5 Virginia Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Live stats of Sunday's game will be available at DaytonFlyers.com.
