Coming off a season in which she led the Dayton Flyers in stroke average and total rounds played, freshman Katie Dempsey earned the 2007 Most Valuable Player Award at the team's banquet.

The other award winner was senior Melissa Gaus who won the Coaches Award for the second year in a row honoring her leadership, academic success and community service efforts.

Dempsey shot an 81.0 average during the fall and an 81.3 average in the spring season with two low rounds of 78. The Cincinnati native's best result came at the Detroit Invitational where she finished tied for fifth.

Not only is Dempsey a quality player, but she delivered in the classroom as well with a 3.4 grade point average in her first semester.

"The Most Valuable Player Award represents our strongest player who was most instrumental in our success this season," said head coach Sally Kosters. "There is no doubt who that was, Katie Dempsey."

Gaus, UD's 2006-07 NCAA Woman of the Year, is a four-year member Flyers and this year's team co-captain. She led Dayton in stroke average in her junior season, and was third this season (85.8).

Off the course, Gaus received an Honorable Mention for the Wooden Citizenship Award, which includes nominations from colleges and universities all over the country. She is also a member of UD's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has been on the Dean's List every semester.

"Melissa has been an outstanding team captain and I could not have asked for a better player, student, role model or a better partner in helping me with the team," Kosters said.

There were also eight freshmen varsity awards handed out and junior co-captain Mary Kane received a watch for participation as a junior.
