University of Dayton women’s cross country placed 17th out of 37 teams at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

For the fourth time in as many races, senior Elissa Mason led the Flyers on the course, finishing with a 21:48 time in the Flyers first 6K race of the season.

“Overall it was a pretty good day, the ladies competed and really worked hard,” Head Coach Sarah Hinkley said. “The spread was good and we ran closer together. Our goal is to make sure we are healthy and rested for the conference meeting in a couple weeks.”

Freshman Colleen Grassley was in Dayton’s top-five for the first time, clocking in at 23:15 good for 143 team points for the Flyers.

“Colleen had a good day today,” Hinkley said. “What she did is going to translate very well going into our next meet and the rest of the season.”

Florida State took home the team title with three top 10 runners and a combined 46 points. La Salle paced all four Atlantic 10 Conference teams in the race with a 13th-place finish, closing followed by Charlotte and 15th and Dayton in 17th. Xavier finished 25th.

Dayton’s 17th-place finish is 13 spots ahead of UD’s finish (30th) in last season’s Pre-National race.

Dayton’s next competition is at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Charlotte, N.C.
