DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women’s basketball team remained perfect against the No. 13/16 Vanderbilt Commodores winning 71-66 on Sunday at UD Arena.  Sunday’s win is the second against a nationally ranked opponent this season (The Flyers knocked off No. 25 DePaul 92-80 on Nov. 10. 2012).
 
Dayton’s bench was a major factor as they outscored Vandy 26-6. The Flyers out-rebounded Vanderbilt 48-40. They have beaten every team on the boards this season. Today’s win was also the third time the Flyers have had at least four people score in double figures.
 
Dayton has beaten three teams (DePaul, Toledo and Vanderbilt) this season that have a player named to the Naismith Watch List
 
UD was led by sophomore Andrea Hoover’s 14 points, going 5-of-15 from the field. Hoover added five rebounds, all on offense, and three assists while going a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
 
Senior Sam MacKay set a new career-high with eight assists. She also added four points. 
 
The freshman duo of Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova and Amber Dean each had 12 points and eight rebounds. Cornelie-Sigmundova’s 12 points are a career high.
 
Seven different players scored in the first half give Dayton a 33-30 lead. Cornelie led UD in the first half with eight points off of 4-of-7 shooting.
 
Dayton pulled ahead thanks to a 7-0 run capped off by Cassie Sant’s layup putting the Flyers up 25-17 with 6:59 left in the first half.
 
Four quick points from Vanderbilt’s Tiffany Clarke put the Commodores up by one, until a basket by MacKay helped regain the Flyer lead before the half.
 
Vandy took a 41-37 lead, their largest of the game, with 16:22 left in the second half. A jump shot by Hoover sparked an 11-0 run that put the Flyers ahead 48-41 with 12:26 remaining in the game. Hoover had seven of UD’s points during the run.
 
UD extended its lead to 60-52 lead with 4:49 left when MacKay connected with Amber Deane for a fast-break layup. Sant then stretched the lead to double digits hitting a jump shot with 4:11 left.
 
Vanderbilt came within three points of the Flyers with 20 seconds left, but UD’s Kelley Austria and Cornelie-Sigmundova’s free throws helped Dayton ice the game 71-66.
 
Dayton remains at home, hosting the Dayton Marriott Classic at UD Arena Nov. 23-25. The Flyers will face Buffalo on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. ET.
