UD CROSS COUNTRY POSTS 7th and 11th FINISHES AT FALCON INVITE

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Bowling Green State University Saturday morning to compete in the Falcon Invite for their fifth meet of the year. The men's team took seventh while the women's team placed eleventh at the event. It was a repeat of last week's All Ohio Championship race as BGSU's Eddie Kipchoge and UD's Mike Andersen battled it out for the first place finish. Kipchoge eventually took home the individual honors running in a time of 24:40 as Andersen came in close-behind in a strong second place finish at 25:07. Finishing second for the UD men's squad for the fifth time this year was senior Eric Contreras who recorded his season-best time of 26:12 good for 11th place overall. Junior Daniel Sammons completed the eight kilometer course in 26:50 for 36th place as freshman Derek Henderson made his scoring debut for the Flyers coming in fourth in a time 27:17 good for 36th place. Just ten seconds behind Henderson was sophomore Tommy Middleton who running in a time of 27:27 placed 66th to complete the scoring for the men's team. Displacing 195 runners from 13 teams, Michael Connolly (27:40) and Robby Strock (27:45) placed sixth and seventh, respectively for the Flyers. The women's team finished 11th out of 19 teams with 273 points. Freshman Kristin Terry and sophomore Ellen Nienhaus both tied their season-best times at the 5k event (there previous season-best times came at the National Catholic Invite). Terry was the first Flyer finisher in 39th place with a time of 19:17. Nienhaus followed running in a time of 19:31 for 46th place. Other Flyers to score included Sydney Hubbard who placed 60th (19:45) and sophomore Jacqueline Jaworek who clocked in at 19:49, good for a 62nd place finish. Freshman Alex Miles, last week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, rounded out the scoring for Dayton coming in 66th place with a time of 19:57. Freshman Bridget Conlon (20:09) and sophomore Amy Kempf (20:11) finished in the sixth and seventh places respectively, displacing 195 runners at the meet. The University of Akron took home both the men's and women's titles. The women's individual winner was senior Ashley Ritchey from IPFW who ran the course in a time of 17:56. Both the men and women Flyers return to action on October 28th where they will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships. |
