SOUTH BEND - The Dayton Flyer cross country teams traveled to South Bend, Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday Oct. 2. The men's team placed 12th in the Blue Division out of 23 teams scoring 326 points. The women's team placed second out of 20 teams in the Gold Division, scoring 104 points.

The women's team's second-place Gold finish included defeating other Atlantic 10 teams such as Xavier and Saint Louis. Maureen Bulgrin was the first Flyer to finish in the women's race. She placed fourth overall in a time of 17:48. Liz Coorey was the second Flyer running a time of 18:09 which was good enough for 11th overall. The next Dayton runner was Elissa Mason (18:21) who placed 17th.

Lindsey Cummings (18:47) and Emily Zimmerman (18:50) were the next two Flyers placing 34th and 38th respectively.

The men's cross country team competed in the meet's Blue Division, which was limited to teams that were ranked in the their respective regions and included nine nationally-ranked teams. UD's 12th-place finish included wins over Notre Dame (ranked 28th nationally and fifth in the Great Lakes Region) and Penn State (receiving the 35th-highest votes nationally and ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region).

With Dayton entering the meet ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Region, Friday's result was a big step in building UD's resume toward a potential at-large berth in this year's NCAA Championships. It was also the first time the a Flyer men's cross country team defeated Notre Dame, a "first time" made even more impressive given the fact that it occurred on ND's home course.

The men were led by junior Chris Lemon who placed tenth in a school record time of 24:05. Matt Lemon was the second Flyer to cross the finish line in a time of 24:19 good enough for 25th place and a new personal best. Mike Andersen (25:54) was the third man for the Flyers coming in 62nd place.

Redshirt freshmen Greg Roeth (25:27) and true freshman Jeremy Schiele (25:44) were the fourth and fifth men for Dayton, placing 107th and 127th respectively.

Both teams will take a week off before traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana for the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 17. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. ET.
