VOLLEYBALL CLIPPED BY TEMPLE IN FIVE GAMES

PHILADELPHIA - Visiting Dayton saw its five match winning streak come to a halt on Friday as Temple beat the Flyers 3-2 (20-30, 30-18, 30-27, 28-30, 15-12) in Atlantic 10 volleyball action at McGonigle Hall.

UD (11-6, 3-1 A-10) lost its first A-10 match of the season and fell half a game behind TU (6-12, 3-0 A-10) in the conference standings.

The Flyers were led by senior outside hitter Christy Utnage (Indianapolis, Ind.) with 19 kills, 18 digs, three blocks and three service aces.

Two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week sophomore Faye Barhorst (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added 18 kills and five blocks of her own. The duo of Utnage and Barhorst accounted for 45.0 of the Flyers 77.0 points scored in the match.

Dayton was held to a .139 hitting percentage in the match despite 39 assists by junior setter Nicole Schott (Roscoe, Ill.).

Defensively, UD held the Owls to a .204 team hitting percentage as the Flyers racked up 102 digs. Five Dayton players reached double digits in digs led by freshman libero Adrienne Green (Palatine, Ill.) with 23. Senior Shanna Pressler (Archbold, Ohio) had a season-high 20 digs followed by Utnage's 18, 14 from freshman Amanda Kenny (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and 10 by Schott.

Temple used a two pronged attck to escape with the victory as A-10 Rookie of the Week Liu Yue had 23 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and two service aces and senior Liu Zhen Jia finished with 21 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and a service ace.

Dayton returns to action on Saturday in Philadelphia against La Salle (7-12, 0-3 A-10) at 5 p.m.
