Sep. 1, 2004

DAYTON, Ohio - The Dayton volleyball team won the 2004 Dayton Flyer Invitational Saturday sweeping West Virginia, 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-24), at the Frericks Center. Christy Utnage (Indianapolis, IN) won her second-straight Flyer Invitational MVP award, with 55 kills in the tournament. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team for UD was Nicole Schott (Roscoe, IL).

Faye Barhorst (Ft. Loramie, OH) added 14 kills for the match and 44 kills and 17 blocks in the tournament.

The Flyers opened to a 12-6 lead in game one, and after the Mountaineers pulled within three at 16-13, Dayton stretched the lead to 20-15. UD closed out the game 30-22 as Barhorst drilled home the winner.

West Virginia stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the second game but the Flyers clawed back to tie it at 9-9. From an 11-11 tie, UD went on a 5-0 run, but the Mountaineers answered by pulling within 19-18, and then taking a 21-20 lead. From that point, neither team had more than a one-point edge as they alternated points until UD took a 29-27 lead. Utnage blasted a set-up from freshman Andi Moran (St. Louis, MO) for the game-winner.

The Flyers fell behind 7-5 in game three and watched the Mountaineers pull ahead 16-10. Dayton came back to tie it at 18-18 with three kills from Barhorst. The teams traded points until an Utnage kill gave UD a 25-24 lead.

Freshman Gina Heiderman (Niles, IL) came off the bench for a solid game three, with four kills in that game alone.
