VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT OHIO STATE TO OPEN SEASON

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team opened the 2004 season by falling at Ohio State, 3-0. The Flyers, coming off an NCAA Tournament season, were swept by the Buckeyes 30-17, 30-16, 30-15. Christy Utnage (Indianapolis, IN) led UD in kills and digs.

Dayton dropped the first game 30-17 as the Buckeyes jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Flyers rallied to pull within 13-12, but Ohio State reeled off a six-straight points to take control. The Buckeyes took a 6-3 lead in game two, and after UD pulled within one at 8-7 but again the Buckeyes had a six-point run in them. Ohio State rolled in game three,

Ohio State hit .333 for the match while UD hit .086 on the evening. Faye Barhorst (Ft. Loramie, OH) had six kills and five blocks for the Flyers. Utnage had seven kills and five digs. Nicole Schott (Roscoe, IL) had 15 assists. Stacey Gordon led OSU with 16 kills.

The Flyers will host the Dayton Flyers Classic Friday and Saturday. The first match Friday features West Virginia versus Tennessee Tech at 4:30, with the Flyers taking on Coastal Carolina at 7:30. UD will meet Tennessee Tech (1:00 p.m.) and West Virginia (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday, with Coastal meeting Tech and West Virginia versus Coastal Carolina as the other matches.
