DAYTON SWEEPS KENT STATE, 3-0

DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton volleyball used a team effort to rout visiting Kent State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-20) on the first day of the A-10/MAC Challenge at the Frericks Center on Friday evening. The win lifted Dayton's (24-9) winning streak to 19 consecutive matches, which is tied for the seventh longest in the nation and is the second longest in program history. Kent State fell to 9-21 on the season. Fifteen different Flyers saw action in the match as UD out hit KSU .372 to .158 while leading kills (61-35) and service aces (4-3). As a result of the balanced attack, just two Dayton players reached double figures in kills. Junior All-America candidate Faye Barhorst led all players with 19 kills on the night. The 2005 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year hit .630 with her 19 kills coming in just 27 swings with two errors. A-10 All-Rookie Team pick Kortney Norris followed with 10 kills while hitting .529 to go along with three digs. A-10 Setter of the Year Nicole Schott dished out 52 assists to begin her final home weekend as a Flyer. She will be the lone UD player honored as part of Senior Day ceremonies before Dayton's final home match in Saturday. Defensively, the Flyers were led by 11 digs from sophomore Amanda Kenny and 10 by freshman Brittney Scheeringa as the Dayton defense did not allow any of the Kent State players to record double-digits in kills. UD wraps up its home schedule on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match against Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks lost earlier on Friday to Xavier, 3-0 in the opening match of the A-10/MAC Thanksgiving Classic. |
