KINGSTON, RI - Dayton will make its third consecutive appearance in the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship match after a 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 30-19, 30-28) win over Charlotte in Friday's semifinals at Keaney Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. "I don't think that we played our best volleyball tonight, but we took care of an earlier loss to Charlotte in the regular season," A-10 Coach of the Year Tim Horsmon remarked. "I think the experience of being here the past couple of years paid off tonight. However, it seemed as if our freshman played well especially Brittney Scheeringa in serve receive and Kortney Norris taking some big swings for us. I think the composure around them made them better tonight." Top-seeded UD (22-9), winners of 17 consecutive matches, will face second-seed Temple on Saturday at 7 p.m. as it looks to win its third consecutive conference crown. "There is equity in all four teams in this tournament," Horsmon said. "We beat Xavier twice in five and Temple one time, also in five. Then we lost to Charlotte in five. There are no absolutes in this tournament. It will take some great volleyball to win a championship this weekend." Dayton out hit Charlotte .244 to .195 in the match overall and dominated the net with 14.0 blocks to 8.5 for the 49ers. A-10 Setter of the Year Nicole Schott dished out 48 assists as four different UD players reached double figures in kills on the evening. All-Rookie Team selection Kortney Norris hit .306 with 16 kills and two blocks to lead all Flyers in her first A-10 Tournament match. A-10 Second Team pick Robynne Green followed with 15 kills while hitting at a .462 clip. She added five service aces, four blocks and three digs for the Flyers. Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Faye Barhorst dominated both sides of the net as she hit .370 with 13 kills to go along with nine blocks (two solo, seven assists). Sophomore Jamie-Lee Richards rounded out the group with 10 kills and four blocks. She was one of four Flyers to tally more than two blocks as classmate Amanda Kenny added three of her own. The duo of Schott and A-10 Honorable Mention pick Adrienne Green each tallied 14 digs for the Flyers who out hit the 49ers in three of the four games of the match. |
