DEET, BROCK EARN PRESTIGIOUS YEAR END AWARDS
May 7, 2007 Two Dayton Flyers from the women's track and field team earned prestigious end-of-the-year honors. Junior Emily Deet earned the AJ Cohen Memorial Scholarship and freshman Micailah Brock will represent the University of Dayton at the 2007 NCAA National Leadership Conference. Deet ran in three races during the 2006-07 cross country season. She competed at the Flyer 5K where she ran the home course in a time of 21:02 and went on to record her season-best time in the National Catholic Invite placing 16th in a time of 20:39. In the spring track and field season Deet finished 17th in the indoor 3,000 meter run at the Findlay Invitational, 16th in the 5,000 meter run at the outdoor All-Ohio Championship and the outdoor Hurricane Invitational and 12th in the indoor Atlantic 10 Championship. Brock placed 26th in the 100 meter hurdles at the Hurricane Invitational, eighth in the long jump at the indoor Oiler open, posted a career-best in the 55-meter hurdles at the A-10 Championship and earned eighth place in the pentathlon at the Findlay Classic. During the indoor season, Brock recorded two personal bests at the Ball State University Pentathlon meet and a Top 10 finish in the 60 meter dash at the Oiler Open. Recently at the 2007 A-10 Women's Track and Field Championship, Brock placed fifth with 4,166 points recording a personal best. The NCAA National Leadership Conference is an annual event that aims to provide a diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities. On Dec. 10, 2000, Austin "A.J." Cohen was killed in a house fire. A senior economics major, the 21-year-old Cohen was also a member of the UD football team, playing wide receiver for the Flyers. The University of Dayton Student Athlete Advisory Board honors Cohen's life through the A.J. Cohen Scholarship and presents the opportunity to all students at UD to recognize and remember Cohen. The football team hands out The A.J. Cohen Flyer of the Year Award each season. Both Brock and Deet are members of UD's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The purpose of the SAAC is to provide student-athletes the opportunity to communicate more effectively with University of Dayton athletic administration, coaches and staff. The committee also encourages unity, common purpose and camaraderie between teams and among all student-athletes through service projects and fund-raisers. Brock is an exercise science and fitness management major while Deet is studying pre-physical therapy. |
