SOPHOMORE SPEEDSTER GETS NCAA NOD
March 9, 2009
After setting six school records in roughly three months, Dayton sophomore Ashley Cattran was selected on Monday to run the 800 meter event in the 27th annual Women's NCAA Championships this weekend. It will be the first time a UD runner has ever competed for a collegiate national title. The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced all 568 participants on Monday for the national competition, which will be held March 13-14 at the McFerrin Athletic Center in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M University will serve as the hosting school. The University of Dayton women's track team had three athletes with provisional qualifying times this season, but Cattran was the lone Flyer to be selected. She will join an elite field of 17 runners in the 800 meter event, where her season-best time of 2:06.37 places her 16th in the pre-race rankings. This will be the final race of an astounding indoor season for Cattran, who has already wrapped up the Atlantic 10 title and competed in Boston at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The complete list of all student-athletes competing in the championships is available on the NCAA Web site. ESPN360.com will stream portions of the championships live both days. Remaining coverage will be available on www.NCAA.com. Additionally, ESPN2 will air a 90-minute show at 2:30 p.m. EST, Monday, March 23.
