TRACK AND FIELD AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND
Feb. 16, 2005 Dayton, OH - The University of Dayton track and field team will travel to Kingston, RI, Saturday to compete in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Nine other A-10 schools will be entered in the competition. The Flyers will be looking to improve upon their sixth place finish at last year's championships. "I am excited about the upcoming A-10 Championships," said head coach Ann Alyanak. "The team has been improving each meet and it should be exciting to see how much more we improve this weekend. Everyone seems to be competing at their best at the right time." Along with Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Xavier make up the list of the teams competing in the women's championships. Rhode Island won last year's championship and will be hosting this year's championship in their Mackal Field House. Kelly Pohlman (Versailles, OH) looks to defend her gold medal in the shot put and improve upon her bronze medal that she won in the weight throw. She has won the gold medal in shot put in four of the six meets this year, finishing in second and fourth in the other two. Pohlman has won a medal in the weight throw in every indoor competition this year as well. Senior Aftan Delaney (Bellbrook, OH) looks to improve upon her silver medal in last year's 55m dash. This year in the 55m dash, Delaney has won a bronze at the Ball State Open and tied for fourth at the Findlay Classic. Sophomore Liz Forster (Reynoldsburg, OH) will be competing in the for UD. She competed in the 500m run last year and finished in 15th place with a time of 1:20.76. She finished third in the 400m dash at the Findlay Classic and fourth at the Indiana Hoosier Open. Another sophomore, Candace McKinley (Helotes, TX) will also be competing for UD. She competed in last year's championships as a freshman in the long jump where she finished seventh with a distance of 16-11.25 and in the 55m hurdles where she ended with a time of 8.82, which put her in 11th place. She finished tied for fourth in the 55m hurdles at the Findlay Classic. At the All-Ohio Championships, she finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-00.25 This meet will be the last time this season that Flyer individuals will be able to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. They will be held March 11th and 12th in Fayetteville, AR. The Flyers will kick off their outdoor season of track April 2nd at the Oliver Nickoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, OH. |
