POHLMAN, McKINLEY TAKE GOLD AT ATLANTIC 10 OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
May 8, 2005
The University of Dayton had a pair of gold-medal-winning performances on the second and final day of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held in Richmond, Virginia. Junior Kelly Pohlman (Versailles, OH) successfully defended her shot put title, and sophomore Candace McKinley (Helotes, TX) also repeated as the champion in the heptathlon. Pohlman's mark of 45-7 in the shot gave her a second straight A-10 shot put title, and ran a streak of Flyer shot putters winning the A-10 championship to four years (Jodi Borges won the event in 2002 and 2003). On Saturday, Pohlman also placed second in the discus and third in the hammer throw to account for almost one-third of UD's points. McKinley won the heptathlon the first time she competed in the event this season. Her 4,372 points edged Fordham's Candice Drinkwater, who had 4,178. McKinley improved her point total from last year by 110 points and missed the A-10 record by just 210 points. Senior sprinter Aftan Delaney (Bellbrook, OH) placed third in the 100m dash (12.20) and fifth in the 200m dash (25.98). UD finished eighth in the team competition. Rhode Island won the team championship with 150 points, followed by Duquesne (135), La Salle (116), Richmond (103), Temple (85.5), Fordham (82), Massachusetts (76.5), Dayton (73), Saint Joseph's (33), and Xavier (3).
