April 12, 2008
Oxford, OH - Back in a familiar setting on Saturday, the University of Dayton track team finished fifth at the Miami Team Challenge. The Flyers scored 74 points overall and received 19 top-ten times during their second visit to Miami University in the past three weeks. Dayton finished behind the hosting RedHawks, Buffalo, Bowling Green and Ohio University, but displaced nine other schools at the meet. In the sprints, UD had a win in the 400 as freshman Ashley Cattran took first (57.53). Following Cattran were juniors Lisa Aubry (1:00.11) and Stacy Chew (1:00.54), who came in fifth and sixth respectively. The 4x400 relay team also fared well, with a third place finish and a season best time (4:00.47). In the 100 meter dash, sophomore Lauren McCormick continued her successful spring with a second place finish (12.19), while classmate Lauren O'Brien took eighth with a season best time of 12.58. Freshmen Liz Coorey and Brigitte Sherman shined in the 1500 meter run for the Flyers. Coorey came in fourth overall with a season best time of 4:43.99, while Sherman claimed seventh (4:46.39). Juniors dominated the 3000 meter steeplechase for Dayton, as Sydney Hubbard finished fourth (11:44.06) with Ellen Nienhaus following in fifth position (11:55.16). In the hurdles, another junior, Andrea Cornell, was the only placer for Dayton in the 100 meter event. Cornell had a season-best time of 14.79 and placed fifth overall. In the field events, freshman Tiffany Maske recorded a season best leap of 5-05.00 to finish second overall in the high jump. Senior Megan Sweeney also jumped 5-03.00 to finish eighth. Katie DeVault finished ninth in the pole vault (10-08.00), while sophomore Andrea Funk took fourth in the triple jump (36-07.50). Throwers Emily Overmyer, Mallory Barnes, Johnna Zaccari all recorded top-ten finishes for the Flyers as well. Overmyer, a freshman, finished seventh in the discus throw with a season best distance of 135-06. In the hammer throw, Mallory Barnes placed ninth with a toss of 149-06. Barnes also finished tenth in the shot put (39-11.25). Fellow freshman Johnna Zaccari took third in the event with a season best distance of 44-06.75. Dayton will be hoping for better weather and looking to build on its early success in the next week, but there will be no break in the action for the Flyers. The squad will be right back at it next weekend with the All-Ohio Championship meet, which will take place on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. |
