Oxford, OH - The University of Dayton women's track team placed third at the Southern Cup Invitational on a blustery Saturday afternoon at the George L. Rider track complex on the campus of Miami University. High winds led to higher times overall, but the Flyers still managed to score 111 team points on the strength of 33 top-ten finishes.

UD finished behind the University of Cincinnati (289) and hosting MU (175), but beat in-state rivals Ohio and Xavier University, as well as Northern Illinois University at the all-day event.

In the sprints, the Flyers were paced by sophomore Brittany Thomas, who recorded top-ten finishes in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Thomas finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.62 and ran the 200 in 26.52 to finish sixth. Sophomore Lauren O'Brien also recorded a top-ten finish, placing ninth in the 100 (13.17).

In the 400 meter run, Dayton had three of the top six placers. That group was led by freshman Ashley Cattran, who placed second in a time of 57.50. Cattran was followed by juniors Stacy Chew and Lisa Aubry, who spent the race close to one another. Chew logged a time of 59.18 to finish fifth, while Aubry came in just behind to take sixth-place overall (1:00.32).

Dayton had two more top-ten placers in the 800 meter run. Freshman Brigitte Sherman (2:21.57) finished eighth, while sophomore Kate Tejkl took 10th (2:22.21). Sherman also placed fifth in the 1,500 meter run (4:49.01).

Juniors Anne Oltman and Sydney Hubbard were the lone Flyers to compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Both fared well in the event, Oltman finished first overall (11:38.84) and Hubbard took fourth in a time of 11:57.31.

In the 5,000 meter event, UD had four runners interspersed into the top-ten. Freshmen Liz Coorey (18:21.72) and Maureen Bulgrin (18:35.76) led the way with sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively. Junior Jacqueline Jaworek came across the line ninth in 18:50.82, while sophomore Kristin Terry recorded a time of 18:52.52 to take tenth.

Andrea Cornell was the lone placer for UD in the hurdles, the junior battled the wind to ultimately record a time of 15.89. She finished seventh overall in the 100 meter event.

In the team events, UD's 4x100 squad took fourth (49.71) while the 4x400 relay group came in third (4:01.72).

The Flyers continued their successes into the field events, where freshman Emily Overmyer shattered her previous personal mark of 131-11 in the discus throw. The rookie got off a toss of 143-03 to set a new individual record and win the event. Sophomore Molly McCarty also finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 120-07.

Freshmen Lauryn Fougerousse and Tiffany Maske along with senior Megan Sweeney all leaped 5-03.00 in the high jump and were placed seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

Pole vaulters Katie DeVault and Pembroke Strickland also notched top-ten finishes. DeVault, a sophomore, climbed to a height of 10-02.00 to take seventh place. Strickland, a freshman, reached 9-08.00 in taking ninth overall.

In the triple jump, sophomore Andrea Funk took second place with a combined score of 35-09.25.

The throwers were also strong for UD, as the Flyers saw 10 of them grab top-ten spots.

In the hammer throw, freshman Mallory Barnes took third (158-07). Barnes also placed tenth in the shot put event (39-10.00). Sophomore Molly McCarty claimed seventh (146-05), while another rookie, Kerry Allen, placed ninth with a throw of 143-05.

Freshman Johnna Zaccari placed second in the shot put (44-01.50), while sophomore Sarah Allen's toss went a distance of 43-09.25, good for third-place.

Micailah Brock and Amy Kremer placed sixth and seventh in the javelin competition. Brock, a sophomore, launched her pole 108-02, while Kremer, a junior, recorded a distance of 106-05.

The Flyers will now have a week off before heading back to Oxford on April 11 for the Miami University Team Challenge.
