WOMEN'S TENNIS REFLECTS ON SPRING SEASON
April 28, 2005 The UD women's tennis team had a rough start to their 2005 spring season with a loss to Miami University 6-1. The next weekend, the Flyers dominated Cleveland State University in both singles and doubles play, defeating the Vikings 5-2. January ended with a loss to Ball State University 6-1. February began with a win against the University of Evansville 5-2. Freshman Allysa Detroy (Evansville, IN), sophomore Kate Mellion (Clinton, OH) and sophomore Kara Metzger (Franksville, WI) dominated singles and doubles play against the Aces. The team next traveled to Kentucky, where the Flyers defeated Lipscomb University 5-2, but lost to Eastern Kentucky 7-0 and Morehead State 4-3. A solid 7-0 win over IPFW followed the next weekend with the team winning all singles and doubles matches. The month ended with the defeat of the Detroit Titans 5-2. Interim Coach Dawn Mamula took over the team in March and brought a string of good luck to the Flyers. The team went on a 7-2 run to finish the regular spring season. The Flyers defeated Akron University (6-1), Niagara University (6-0), St. Bonaventure University (7-0), University of Tampa (4-3), Wright State University (5-2), Duquesne University (4-3) and Northern Kentucky University (7-0). The two losses came against Butler University (7-0) and Youngstown State University (4-3). The Flyers ended the season by taking 6th place at the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The team met up again with St. Bonaventure University in the first round and defeated the Bonnies 4-0. The second round matched UD with their rival Xavier University, who beat the Flyers 4-0. The team slipped past Duquesne University 4-2 in the third round, but lost to George Washington University 4-1. The top women's tennis performer was senior Erin Kirkland (Dayton, OH). She was named A-10 Performer of the Week for the week of January 31. Kirkland also earned the position of the most UD women's tennis wins in both singles and doubles play with 168. The Flyers ended the spring season 14-8 and 2004-2005 record to 14-10. |
