UNGER RESIGNS AS UD WOMEN'S TENNIS COACH
Feb. 25, 2005 The University of Dayton has announced that Mike Unger has resigned as the women's tennis coach for personal reasons. The resignation is effective immediately. Unger was in his 13th season as UD's women's tennis coach. His overall record was 131-136, including 5-6 this season. Four of his players were named All-Atlantic 10. Five of UD's teams under Unger were named All-America Academic Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Dawn Mamula, the athletics administrator responsible for the sport of tennis at UD, will coach the team for the rest of the season on an interim basis. Before coming to UD in 2000 as an administrator, Mamula played and coached tennis at Otterbein College. Mamula was two-time First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference, and was a part of two OAC championships won by the Lady Cardinals. A 1998 graduate of Otterbein, she was an assistant coach at her alma mater until she came to Dayton. "We accepted Mike's resignation with regret," Mamula said. "Mike did a fine job with our team, and we appreciate how he has built the program into what it is. He brought student-athletes into the program who have performed well in the classroom as well as on the court. But we respect his decision and wish him good luck." "This will be an interesting transition from being the program administrator to the coach, but I'm looking forward to working with the team and finishing the season well," Mamula concluded. The Flyers' next match will be Friday, March 4 when they host Akron. The season will conclude April 22-24 at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Greenbelt, Maryland. |
