Feb. 11, 2008
Freshman Laina Grote was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and A-10 Rookie of the Week on Monday following an unblemished 6-0 record in three matches over the weekend in Fort Wayne, IN. It was the second time this season the Galena, OH native has received Rookie of the Week honors. Grote now holds the team's best singles record at 6-2. The Saint Francis DeSales graduate went undefeated this weekend at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles. Grote, who has now rattled off five consecutive singles wins, led the Flyers to a 2-1 record over the weekend. In the team's first match on Friday, she defeated Wisconsin Milwaukee's Martina Schnapp 7-5 in the first set before Schnapp retired due to injury in the second set. In doubles, Grote and teammate Molly Mathews topped Tracy Litscher and Lauren Fenley, 8-1. On Saturday, Dayton swept Green Bay, 7-0, and Grote was forced to gut out a three-set victory over Kelly Stadum, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. She and Mathews cruised once again in doubles, defeating Kari Petrashek and Laura Bartingale, 8-2. Grote defeated IPFW's Ashley Coulson on Sunday, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, in UD's 6-1 win. In doubles, the duo once again dominated at No. 3, winning 8-0. Following a season-opening loss at No. 3 singles to Cincinnati, Grote has gone 6-1 in the No. 2 slot. She was also named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Jan. 21. The Flyers are 3-5 this spring, including wins in three of their last four matches. They are home this weekend for a match against Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Dayton Center Courts at 3 p.m. ET. |
