Singles win by freshman Megan Gray aids team in 4-2 victory

Results

The UD women's tennis team fought hard for their win against Duquesne University in round three at the Atlantic 10 Tournament this afternoon. The Flyers squeezed past the Dukes 4-2, making it the team's second win against Duquesne this season.

The team snatched three victories in singles play starting off with win by senior Erin Kirkland (Dayton, OH) over Johanna Bezjak 6-4, 6-4. The second win came from freshman Allysa Detroy (Evansville, IN) against Julie Wagner 6-0, 6-1. Fellow freshman Megan Gray (Akron, OH) claimed the third victory over Ciara McDermott 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles action, Kirkland and senior Courtney McDowell (Centerville, OH) defeated Jacqueline Hughes and Alicia McNamara 8-3. Detroy joined forces with sophomore Kara Metzger (Franksville, WI) to grab a win against Bezjak and Wagner 9-7.

The team's record moves to 14-7 on the season.

The Flyers will face 5-th seeded George Washington tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. where the two teams will play it out for fifth place in the tournament.
