WINS FROM GROTE, MATHEWS NOT ENOUGH IN 5-2 LOSS
Feb. 2, 2008
A pair of victories from two first-year UD players was not enough on Saturday as the Flyers were defeated by Southern Illinois, 5-2, in their first home match of the year at Five Seasons Sports Club. In addition to taking four singles courts, Southern Illinois also won two-of-three doubles matches. Dayton fell to 0-4 with the loss while the Salukis improved to 1-0. Freshman Laina Grote and sophomore transfer Molly Mathews each improved their singles records to a team-best 2-2 with their wins on Saturday. Grote defeated Martina Vianna Ce at No. 2 singles, 7-6(3), 6-3. At No. 6, Mathews held off Andrea Courtney for a 6-3, 7-5 win. Senior Megan Gray took the first set of her match at No. 3 singles, but was outlasted by Jessica Flannery, 6-3, 1-6, 1-6. In doubles, Mathews teamed with Grote at No. 3 to defeat Amanda Taillefer and Ame Blacketer 8-5. However, the Salukis took the other doubles courts, 8-6 and 8-4, to capture the point. Dayton returns to action with a home match against IUPUI on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. ET at Dayton Center Courts. |
