DAYTON SOFTBALL FALLS IN CLOSELY CONTESTED GAMES AT TOLEDO

Toledo, OH - Dayton softball traveled to Toledo, OH to take on the University of Toledo Rockets in a non-conference doubleheader. UD fell to the Rockets 11-10 in game one and 2-0 in the second game. The losses drop the Flyers to 14-15-1 on the season. The Flyers had eight hits while only committing one error in game one. Dayton made the scoreboard first as Sheena Rothwell went 2-4 on the day with three RBI and a single. Shannon St. Clair scored one of her three runs for UD as she walked in from third with the bases loaded as the Flyers went up 3-0 in the first inning. Christine Eggers led off the third inning with a walk followed by a two run homerun in the second hit by St. Clair to put the Flyers up 5-0. St. Clair was 2-4 in game one with three walks and three runs scored. In the third inning, the Rockets made a come back as they were able to score eight runs in the inning including a three-run homer to go up 10-6. The Flyers looked to rally in the late innings as they scored a single run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to get the game within two, 11-9. In the seventh, both Cortney Schafer and Christine Eggers reached on back to back UT fielding errors. St. Clair double to score Eggers but the Flyers were unable to produce any more runs as they fell 11-10. In game two of the doubleheader Dayton fell to the Rockets 2-0 as both teams struggled to get on the board. It wasn't until the sixth inning that either team scored when Toledo scored two unearned runs on a throwing error committed by Dayton. In the last inning Laura Matthews singled to right field but UD was unable to take advantage and bring any runs around. The Flyers return home to take on La Salle Friday in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Dayton's second doubleheader of the weekend will be played Sunday against A-10 foe St. Joseph's at noon. |
