HAWKS TOP FLYERS (5-4) IN FINALE FOR ATLANTIC 10 SWEEP

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton softball team fell in the finale of an Atlantic 10 twinbill against Saint Joseph's 5-4 on Saturday as the Hawks swept the Flyers at East Norriton Field during the weekend. Sheena Rothwell gave a stellar performance going 2-for-4 in game two, blasting a homerun and collecting two RBI's for UD. On Friday, the Hawks took game one, 5-2. Blair Crabtree was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game two. Mollie Schrank gave a 1-for-3 performance adding a run of her own. St. Joe's Dani Gonzales started things off with a homerun to center field to score a run in the second inning. SJU put two more on in the third to take the lead, 3-0. In the fifth, Schrank singled to start the inning. Two batters later, Crabtree hit a single of her own advancing to second on a fielding error plating Schrank. Rothwell smacked a homerun to score two more runs for the Flyers. In the bottom of the fifth, SJU took a 5-3 lead as Rachel Rosenwinkel hit a two-run homerun. Dayton attempted to rally in the seventh as Crabtree singled and Rothwell doubled to get on base. Crabtree scored on a passed ball giving UD one more run, but the next two batters were retired as the Flyers fell in game two, 5-4. In game one, Molly Meyer went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Christine Eggers went 1-for-4 with a run scored of her own as Crabtree went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Chelsea Grozenski suffered the loss in game one, striking out three and walking four. She gave up five hits, five runs of which only two were earned. The Hawks put one on in the bottom of the first and two more in the third to take the lead early on. The Flyers got on board in the fifth as Ellie Malchow, Meyer, and Eggers each singled to load the bases. Schrank reached on a fielder's choice as Malchow was thrown out at home. Crabtree followed up with an RBI single plating Meyer. Rothwell grounded out to first scoring Eggers from third to give UD the team's only runs of the game. St. Joe's put it away in the sixth when Christa Lane Hooper and Pawlikowski scored unearned runs on an error by the shortstop. Dayton collected only one more hit the rest of the way as the team fell 5-2 to Saint Joseph's in the opener. Dayton is back in action at home on Wednesday, April 18 for a non-conference doubleheader against Butler. The Flyers and Bulldogs will face-off at 3 p.m. at UD Softball Stadium. |
