March 24, 2005
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as Dayton beat Robert Morris 6-5 in opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader at the North Athletic Complex on Thursday. UD (6-6) had seven hits in the game by six different players and also drew six walks. Tamsyn Kellough had a team-best two hits as part of a 2-for-3 performance which included a sacrifice fly for her seventh RBI of the season. Laura Matthews reached base three times with walks including the fifth inning when she got to first with a bases on balls before giving way to pinch runner Angel Conaway who scored the game winning run. Tami Roudebush was also 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the first inning for the Flyers. Erin LaFayette pitched 4.0 innings in relief to earn the win for the Flyers. LaFayette (2-2) surrendered just one run on two hits while recording one strikeout. Chelsea Grozenski began the game in the circle for Dayton. She allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out two over 3.0 innings pitched. Dayton got on the board with three runs in the first. After Shannon St. Clair singled to left center, Roudebush lifted her second home run of the season over the left field wall. Cassie Gross followed with a double to left and scored on an RBI single by Kellough to put UD ahead 3-0 after their first at bat. Robert Morris worked its way back into the game with a run in the first and three in the third to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI single and a three-run homer. UD responded with a run in the top of the fourth as Ellie Malchow led off with a single and then scored on an RBI base hit by Christine Eggers to knot the score at 4-4. RMU took the lead again with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Flyers would prevail in the end with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Gross took advantage of a passed ball by the Colonials to tie the score at 5-all. Malchow followed with another walk to load the bases again and Cortney Schafer also drew a free pass to first base for the game-winning RBI, which sent home Conaway from third. |
