CHARLOTTE ADVANCES IN A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH 2-1 OVERTIME VICTORY OVER DUQUESNE
Nov. 3, 2005 DAYTON, Ohio - A dramatic goal from Nicole Labuda lifted Charlotte to a 2-1 overtime victory over Duquesne in the A-10 Women's Soccer Quarterfinal opener on Thursday night at Baujan Field. With the win, the third-seeded 49ers (11-8-0) advance to the A-10 Semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m. to face second-seeded Rhode Island. Sixth-seeded Duquesne ends its season at 10-6-1 overall. The Dukes jumped on the board early as Erica Carey took advantage of a penalty kick in the 27th minute and beat the Charlotte goalkeeper just inside the right post to give Duquesne a 1-0 advantage. Overall in the first half, the Dukes dominated the offense with 10-2 advantage in shots including 3-0 in shots on goal. Duquesne also drew six corner kicks while Charlotte had none. The 49ers regained their focus in the second half and evened the score just 2:11 after the intermission. Labuda directed a ball from right to left to Kelsie Ormsby who chipped it into the back of net from 15 yards out in the 48th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Charlotte kept on the offensive for the remainder of the match as they drew three corner kicks and took three shots in the second half of play. However, neither team would net the game winner until overtime. In the extra session, Charlotte pushed the ball down the right side from the start and Lindsey Beam served ball towards the middle to Labuda. The 49er finished the play from eight yards out for the game winner as Charlotte prevailed 2-1. Juli Black made five saves in net for the 49ers while Virginia Bondi had one stop for the Dukes. |
