UD CONTINUES ATLANTIC 10 ROAD SWING AT RHODE ISLAND AND UMASS
Dayton hits the road this weekend for two Atlantic 10 bouts. UD takes its unbeaten conference mark to Kingston, R.I. where they will battle the Rhode Island Rams Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex. Sunday the Flyers will head to Massachusetts where they will battle the Minutewomen at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field.
FLYER NOTES
Dayton is 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in A-10 heading into the weekend. The Flyers have an RPI of 33, higher than any other Atlantic 10 team. UD is 4-1-1 when playing on the road, including 1-0-1 in the A-10, after picking up a 3-0 win against Xavier (Oct. 5) and a 1-1 tie against Saint Joseph's (Sept. 28).
The Flyers' only losses this season have come against nationally-ranked teams or teams receiving votes in national polls. UD lost 1-0 to then ranked No. 18 Illinois, then 3-1 to No. 11 Duke and 1-0 to Rutgers, which is consistently receiving votes in several polls. The combined record of the three teams that have defeated Dayton is 23-8-1.
The Flyers lead the Atlantic 10 in shots (214), are tied for second in goals scored (21) and are third in points (59).
Junior Mandi Bäck is third in the A-10 in shots, firing off 39 for 3.25 shots per game. She leads UD with five goals (tied for 6th in the A-10), and 12 points. Sophomore Jerica DeWolfe is sixth in the A-10 in shots with 34.
Junior Colleen Gibson is ranked third the A-10 in assists per game. She has five on the season for 0.62 per game.
Five different players have scored game-winning goals for the Flyers, including sophomore Kelly Blumenschein who is tied for fourth in the A-10 in game-winning goals (2).
Eleven different players have scored goals for the Flyers this season and four different players have scored multiple goals. Nine players have dished out assists, with five players having multiple assists.
Dayton is the only team to have two goalkeepers in the A-10's Top 10 for goals against average. Senior Deana Waintraub is fourth in the A-10 and boasts a 0.87 GAA, while sophomore Lisa Rodgers is seventh at 1.06 GAA.
Deana Waintraub is ranked 83rd in the NCAA statistical leaders for goals against average (.866). The Flyers are 6-0-1 when she is in goal this season.
The Flyers have played in four overtime matches this season and are 2-1-1 in those games.
UD boasts the best home attendance average of any Atlantic 10 school. Dayton is averaging 715 fans a game at Baujan Field. The next closest is Saint Louis with 476 fans per home game. UD's game against Indiana (Aug. 22) drew 1,213 fans, the seventh best all-time attendance mark in Dayton women's soccer history.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
Dayton leads the series 10-3-0 against Rhode Island. The most recent match-up between the two teams was last season when the Flyers were victorious, 2-0, on Oct. 7, 2007 at Baujan Field. Mandi Bäck scored a goal in the contest.
URI (4-8-1 overall and 0-4 in the A-10) closed out the weekend with its fourth consecutive loss. The Rams were defeated by George Washington 1-0 on Oct. 5. Five of their eight losses have been decided by one goal.
Rhode Island is second in the A-10 in shots (188), fourth in goals (20) and sixth in points (53).
Sophomore Adrienne Ruhe Lischke leads the Rams with four goals, while freshman Erese Fair leads the Rhody's with four assists. Ruhe Lischke is currently leading the A-10 in shots with 45.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Fede is second for saves (60) and sixth for shutouts in the A-10.
The Rams are coached by Zac Shaw. Now in his fourth season, Shaw has compiled a 39-30-5 overall mark.
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
The Flyers lead the all-time series 10-3-0 against UMass and have won the last nine matches, including a 2-0 win last season at Baujan on Oct. 5.
The Minutewomen are 4-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Atlantic 10 and are coming off a 2-0 loss to George Washington on Oct. 3.
Senior Vanessa Patry is seventh in the A-10 in points after notching five goals and three assists for Massachusetts. She is sixth in the conference in goals scored.
The UMass defense has only allowed 11 goals in 11 games, ranking the Minutewomen second in the A-10 in that category. Their defense has posted three shutouts and never allowed more than two goals.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Luckey is fifth in the A-10 in goals against average, posting a 0.91 GAA. Her .823 save percentage is good enough for fourth in the conference.
Six of the Minutewomen's 11 games have gone into overtime, including five double overtime matches. They are 2-1-3 in overtime games this season.
The Minutewomen are coached by Jim Rudy who is in his 21st season at the helm. In his 27-year career he has an overall record of 311-155-28.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Flyers return to Baujan Field to battle two more A-10 teams. On Friday, Oct. 17 they will play St. Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 19 they will play Duquesne at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK RECAP
Posting their fourth shutout of the season, Dayton knocked off Xavier 3-0 in an Atlantic 10 showdown. The Flyers scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and that's all they would need for the shut out win against the Musketeers. Sophomore Jerica DeWolfe scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute to set the tone. Senior Kim Sacher added another goal in the 20th minute. Just 46 seconds later Dayton found the back of the net again, this time on a breakaway goal by sophomore Kelly Blumenschein. The Flyers outshot Xavier 25-9 and tallied 12 shots on goal. UD goalkeepers Deana Waintraub and Lisa Rodgers split time in frame for the Flyers.
GALLOW RECOGNIZED
University of Dayton women's soccer player Amanda Gallow has been selected as a candidate for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Gallow was one of 30 women's soccer players selected among hundreds of entrants for the Nation's Premier Award for NCAA Senior Student-Athletes. She qualified based on her dedication and achievement in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition.
TERRIFIC TUCKER
Head Coach Mike Tucker's Flyer squads are 105-20-8 in A-10 play. He is the only active coach in the A-10 to achieve more than 100 women's soccer A-10 wins. UD has won seven of the 13 conference regular season titles. In addition, his teams have won the A-10 Tournament Championship five times (1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004).
RAVE RANKINGS
UD is ranked sixth in the Great Lakes NSCAA/adidas Region Poll. The Flyers are ranked 8th of 61 teams in the Great Lakes Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
FRESH FACES
The University of Dayton women's soccer team 2008 recruiting class was ranked 72nd nationally as announced by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Flyer freshman class is second among Atlantic 10 schools and is among the nation's Top 100 for the fifth straight year. Freshman Kelsey Miller has started every game on defense for the Flyers so far in the 2008 season. Emily Kenyon and Kathleen Beljan have started 11 games, while Kelsey Owen has started four and played in all 12 matches at midfielder. Midfielder Josie Grant has also seen action in six games.
KENYON FEATURED IN ESPN MAGAZINE
Freshman Emily Kenyon's acrobatic throw-in has given her some acclaim. A photograph of her flip throw-in is featured in the ZOOM section of ESPN The Magazine (Oct. 6). The photograph was taken at the Dayton vs. Rutgers game on Sept. 14 at Baujan Field.
FLYER SUCCESS
Dayton women's soccer program owns an overall record of 317-143-34 since it became a varsity program in 1984. Dayton has won A-10 Tournament Championship five times (1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004), and made NCAA Tournament Appearances in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
