SIMONETTI LEADS NO. 22 WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST FORDHAM, 3-1

Oct. 29, 2004

BRONX, NY - With three assists from senior Jen Simonetti (Copley, OH), the No. 22 University of Dayton women's soccer team won its 17th-straight game with a 3-1 victory over Fordham University Friday afternoon in Bronx, NY. With the win, the Flyers extended the nation's longest winning streak and improved to 17-1-0 overall, 10-0-0 in the Atlantic 10.

Junior MF Laura Boland scored her first goal of the season, putting UD on the board first just 7:12 before halftime. Boland finished Simonetti's corner kick with her head to give the Flyers the advantage heading to the locker room.

The Flyers extended their lead to a 2-0 with the first of two goals from junior F Reba Sedlacek (Hamilton, OH). In the 50th minute, Sedlacek headed in a pass from junior F Katie Lowstuter (Cincinnati, OH) after Simonetti started the play with a free kick to Lowstuter. The goal would prove to ve the game-winner.

Fordham (8-6-2, 3-6-1) would pull within 2-1 in the 75th minute after Beth Purcell intercepted a clearing pass and ripped a shot over the head of UD senior GK Stacy DeLuca (Maryville, IL). The unassisted goal was the seventh of the season for Purcell.

But Sedlacek ended any hopes of a Rams comeback with her team-leading 13th tally of season in the 81st minute. In similar fashion as the first UD goal, the junior headed in Simonetti's corner kick to give the Flyers insurance at 3-1.

Dayton outshot Fordham 14-3 for the match while holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Lowstuter paced the Flyers with four shots.

The Flyers will end the regular season at La Salle University Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Atlantic 10 Championship will be hosted by the University of Massachusetts next Thursday through Sunday, in which UD will have the top seed and a first-round bye.
