SIRMANS SCORES TWICE TO LEAD WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST BUTLER
Sep. 28, 2004
DAYTON - Freshman Courtney Sirmans (Centerville, OH) scored both goals in leading the University of Dayton women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Butler University at Baujan Field Tuesday evening. The Flyers (8-1-0), who wrapped up non-conference play, have won eight-straight matches. After outshooting the Bulldogs 10-5 in the first half, Flyers got on the board first just 4:46 before halftime. Sirmans scored the first of two goals, heading home a corner kick from junior MF Stacy Palumbo (Fairfield, OH) from close range for her third goal of the season. The Flyers extended their lead to 2-0 as Sirmans blasted a shot from 25 yards out to beat BU goalkeeper Katie Sanders. Sirmans collected a loose ball off a BU defender and scored for her fourth tally of the season and the eventual game-winner. UD owned a 17-9 advantage in shots for the match and out-cornered the Bulldogs by a decsivive 10-0 margin. But Butler would not go quietly in the second half as the Bulldogs earned a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. After a Bulldog was fouled in the box, Rachel Pivarnik converted the PK for her second goal of the season - both have come by penalty kick. Sirmans took four shots to lead Dayton while senior Tesia Kozlowski (Westerville, OH) took three. Senior GK Stacy DeLuca (Maryville, IL) made three saves, including a huge save on a three-on-one chance for Butler in the 88th minute. Dayton returns to action Friday night, hosting St. Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 action at Baujan Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Flyers entertain Duquesne at 1:00 p.m. |
