Sep. 5, 2004
CINCINNATI -- The University of Dayton women's soccer team won its third straight match, blanking the University of Cincinnati, 2-0, at the Xavier Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon. Senior GK Stacy DeLuca (Maryville, IL) recorded her third-consecutive shutout in helping the Flyers improve to 3-1-0. The Bearcats fell to 0-3-0. UD opened the scoring eight minutes in as Reba Sedlack (Hamilton, OH) scored her first goal of the season with an assist from senior D Leah Phelps (Cincinnati, OH). Sedlacek took a pass up the right side from Phelps, sliced through the defense and beat UC goalkeeper Tracy Hale to the near side from 8 yards out. The goal was the first of the season for Sedlacek and the second career assist for Phelps. The Flyers took the 1-0 lead to the half, while holding a 9-4 edge in shots. Junior D Alicija Bredlo (Burlington, Ontario) gave the Flyers their first two-goal lead of the season in the 73rd minute, with her second career goal. Bredlo headed home a restart from senior MF Tesia Kozlowski (Westerville, OH), beating UC keeper Sherry Slye, who played the second half, from 10 yards out. UD outshot UC 16-8 for the match, forcing Hale to make three saves and Slye to make one. A UC defender also cleared a sure goal off the line in the second half on a header off a corner kick by Sedlacek. Sedlacek paced the Flyers with six shots while Kozlowski took three. It is the first win for UD over UC since 1993 (the two teams have not meet since 1995). Dayton continues its six-match swing away from Baujan Field next weekend at the Ohio State Invitational. The Flyers will play old Atlantic 10-rival and new ACC member Virginia Tech Friday at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, UD will battle Louisiana State at 11:30 a.m. |
