FLYERS ADVANCE TO A-10 WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TO FACE CHARLOTTE IN A REMATCH OF LAST YEAR'S FINAL
Nov. 6, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 1 seed University of Dayton Flyers scored a season high five goals in their 5-1 victory over No. 5 seed Saint Louis Friday night in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship at Transamerica Field. No. 24 Dayton (15-0-5) keeps its unbeaten record intact and now plays host and No. 2 seed Charlotte this Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. ET in a rematch of last year's final. "We created a ton of good opportunities tonight. We played with high energy and moved the ball very well," said UD's Mike Tucker, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. "It was a good team effort across the board." Freshman Colleen Williams, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, led the Flyers with two goals in the victory over SLU. The former UD midfielder, who has made a transition up top, scored the first goal of the match in the third minute on a corner kick from senior Cara Cornacchia. "Now it is go hard or go home and we don't want to stop playing. We want to win it all and the NCAA is right around the corner," said Williams who leads the Flyers with nine assists. "It's different playing up top but it was fun. I got fed a lot of good balls that I just had to finish. I think getting assists are just as good as goals." Junior Tori Oelschlager scored the eventual game winner in the 21st minute, chipping it over the keeper after senior Mandi Bäck played a perfect ball to her. "Tori played a very nice game for us tonight," said Tucker. Williams scored her second goal of the night and sixth of the season on a corner kick from junior Kelly Blumenschein to give UD a 3-0 lead in the 31st minute. "Colleen is a tough, physical player with great change of pace. She shields well and she has a great finish," said Tucker. "We moved her up top and she is learning so fast. I'm proud of her work ethic and she is a team player all about winning." The Billikens notched their lone goal in the 33rd minute as Emily Kryzer put one away on the assist from Susan Frederickson. It's the first goal the Flyers, who broke a school record with 14 shutouts, have given up in more than 427 minutes of play. UD got the goal back and then some in the second half. Senior Lauren MacCormick (47th minute) and junior Kelly Blumenschein (61st minute) both notched goals to give Dayton the 5-1 final. "I got after them a little bit because we were getting lazy and gave up an uncharacteristic goal," said Tucker. "I was happy how they responded in the second half. I like them to play a perfect game, but it's hard not to be happy with this result." Freshman Katherine Boone, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year, had four saves in goal for UD. |
