DAYTON WOMEN'S SOCCER TIES SCHOOL SHUTOUT RECORD
Oct. 28, 2009
OLEAN, N.Y. - The University of Dayton women's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 3-0 midweek shutout over St. Bonaventure (9-9-0, 6-3-0 Atlantic 10) Wednesday. The Flyers (13-0-5, 9-0-1 A-10) are undefeated in 18 matches and own the longest current unbeaten streak in the nation. With the blanking of the Bonnies, the Flyers tied a school record for shutouts with 13; set by the 2004 squad, the last time UD made the NCAA Tournament. The current Flyer defense has only allowed five goals all season and they currently are ranked No. 1 in the nation in goals against average. "My pride has always been in being a great defensive team," said UD Head Coach Mike Tucker. "We've had a lot of really good ones at Dayton. For us to be considered at the head of the class is pretty awesome. And the best part is they're all coming back again next year." The Flyers, No. 18 in the TopDrawerSoccer Tournament 64 Ranking and No. 24 in the SoccerTimes Top 25, travelled by bus to Olean, N.Y. to make up a snowed out game from Oct. 16. "It was a hard trip. We had a long ride up here," said Tucker. "It rained over night so the field was slow and there was a lot of slipping around. The girls overcame all that. This group, if they have a hurdle they manage to get over it." Cara Cornacchia scored the game winner for the Flyers in the 30th minute on the assist from Colleen Williams; her eighth helper this season which is a team-high. "On the first goal Colleen beat her defender on the end line and laid a perfect ball off," said Tucker. "Cara made a perfectly timed run on the ball. Colleen created the opportunity and Cara finished." Mandi Bäck scored the second goal in the 42nd minute to give Dayton a 2-0 lead before the half. She has scored a team-high eight goals this season. It also marked her 37th career goal, moving her into sole possession of fourth in UD's all-time record book. "There was a lot of individual effort on that one," said Tucker. "She had several opportunities and you could tell on that one that she wasn't going to be denied." Kelly Blumenschein scored the last goal of the match early in the second half. In the 50th minute she crushed the ball past the keeper to give UD a 3-0 lead. "Kelly came in and caught the keeper leaning," said Tucker. "She could have passed it off but made a great decision and blasted it near post and that keeper had no chance." Dayton, ranked 28th in both the NSCAA National Poll and CollegeSoccer360 Standings, plays in its final regular season match against Xavier this Saturday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Baujan Field. With a win, the Flyers will earn, at the least, a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season title. "It's Xavier. I don't care if it's Monopoly, Tiddliwinks or soccer. Both teams want to win," said Tucker. "We want our seniors to go out with glory. We want a minimum of a co-league championship and they deserve nothing less." |
