FLYERS GO COLD AGAINST EXPLORERS
Oct. 22, 2006
Dayton, Ohio - The Flyers (7-5-3) were out shot 13-4 in the second half and fell 1-0 to La Salle (8-8-1) on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. The UD women move to 5-2 in conference play and into a tie for 4th place in the A-10 standings. It was senior day for the Flyers at Baujan Field and lone senior Jaime Monahan, who tore her ACL for the second time just a few weeks ago, was greeted with a round of applause as she received the ball on the opening kick-off before coming of the field. Monahan has brought four years of hard work and dedication to a Flyer team that has gone 31-19-8 during her collegiate career. The Flyers picked up where they left off on Friday night, putting up 10 shots in the first half. Sophomore Amanda Gallow almost put UD on the board first just 11 minutes into the game as she was on the receiving end of a corner kick by classmate Kim Sacher. Gallow's header, however, hit the right post and was cleared wide. At the 16:38 mark, freshmen Caitlin Proffitt and Mandi Bäck combined for a give-and-go that left Bäck open for a shot at the top of the box, but the windy conditions caused the ball to sail just over the goal. The Flyers best chance came in the 39th minute when junior Kristen Persichini sent a booming header at what seemed to be an open net, but a La Salle defender cleared the ball off the line denying UD the goal. In the second half, the Flyers went cold and the Explorers warmed up. La Salle fired seven shots in the first 15 minutes to UD's two. In the 57th minute, a La Salle forward went on a breakaway sending a hard shot at the Dayton goal, but it was Flyer goalie Stacy Chew who made a big save keeping the game scoreless. Chew, who replaced starting goalie Tasha Dittamore in the 41stminute, had eight saves in the game. At the 67:15 mark, La Salle took advantage of the cold and windy conditions. Explorer defender Jenna Guagenti took a free-kick from about 40-yards out, launching it over the head of Chew and in to the net to give La Salle the 1-0 lead and the victory. The Flyers tried to answer just 30 seconds later when Bäck went on a breakaway, hitting a shot that was saved by the diving La Salle goalkeeper. The UD women will close out regular season play on the road next weekend as they face Richmond on Friday (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. E.T. and Charlotte on Sunday (Oct. 29) at 1 p.m. E.T. |
