WOMEN'S SOCCER STUNNED BY CHARLOTTE'S LATE GOAL
Oct. 16, 2005
DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's soccer team was defeated by visiting Charlotte, 1-0, on a goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. Although outshooting the 49ers 28-11, the Flyers were held scoreless for the second-straight match as their record slips to 8-4-3 overall, 4-2-1 in the Atlantic 10. UD recognized its eight seniors in a ceremony before the match who were playing at home for the final time in the regular season. UD's senior of class of Amanda Kuntz, Katie Lowstuter, Laura Boland, Reba Sedlacek, Stacy Palumbo, Alicija Bredlo, Meghan Borysiak and Jacqueline were each in the starting line-up for Sunday's match. But not able to capitalize on the emotion from Senior Day, the Flyers dropped their second conference match and second home match of the season. Rachel Mees scored for Charlotte (8-7-0, 4-2-0) with just 57 seconds remaining in the match with an assist from the A-10's leading scorer Lindsey Beam for the lone goal. Mees took a pass down the right flank, dribbled 10 yards on a breakaway and beat UD goalkeeper Niki Reed to the far left corner. It was the third goal of the year for Mees and the conference-leading 16th assist for Beam. Reed came up with six saves for Dayton, playing the final 77 minutes after replacing the fifth-year senior Kuntz, who earned the start on Senior Day. Charlotte goalkeeper Juli Black made seven saves in helping the 49ers beat the Flyers in the teams' first-ever meeting. Lowstuter and freshman Kim Sacher paced the Flyers with five shots each. Sedlacek and sophomore Courtney Sirmans each took three. The Flyers will end their regular-season conference schedule next weekend with matches at St. Bonaventure (Friday, 3 p.m.) and Fordham (Sunday, 1 p.m.). The regular season finale is Friday, Oct. 28 at the University of Texas. UD will host the A-10 Women's Soccer Championship Nov. 3-6 at Baujan Field. UD drops to fourth in the A-10 standings at 4-2-1, trailing Saint Louis (6-0-0), Rhode Island (4-0-0) and Charlotte (4-2-0). The top six teams will qualify for the Championship and the top two seeds will have a first-round bye. |
