CINCINNATI - The University of Dayton women's soccer squad scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and that's all it would need to shut out the Musketeers 3-0 in an Atlantic 10 showdown Sunday at Xavier University Soccer Complex.

“I thought we had a good week of practice to prepare for this match. We had some good finishes tonight,” said UD head coach Mike Tucker. “The Xavier defense was packed in pretty tight so it was nice to get early goals.”

Sophomore Jerica DeWolfe scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute to set the tone. Senior Kim Sacher added another goal in the 20th minute.

"Our first two goals we got from a distance," said Tucker. "We caught the keeper off the line and Jerica and Kim hit great balls just underneath the crossbar."

Just 46 seconds later Dayton (8-3-1, 2-0-1 A-10) found the back of the net again, this time on a breakaway goal by sophomore Kelly Blumenschein.

"Kelly had a great first touch out wide and just beat her defender," said Tucker. "The keeper made a great save on the first attempt but she gave up the rebound and Kelly finished on second chance."

UD pummeled the Musketeer goalkeeper Kelly Farrell with 12 shots on goal. The Flyers outshot Xavier 25-9. Dayton had several opportunities thwarted by the Musketeers' trap and had eight offside calls against them.

Xavier (1-9-1, 0-2-1 A-10) had just three shots on goal. UD goalkeepers Deana Waintraub and Lisa Rodgers split time in frame for the Flyers. Waintraub started the match, notched one save and improved her win-loss record to 6-0-1. Rodgers tallied two saves in goal to give the Flyers their fourth shutout this season.

“We finally got them spread out,” said Tucker. “I was a little disappointed in the second half. We had a lot of room to play in the second half and we kind of took our foot off the pedal. It’s a real good feeling being up three goals to none.”

Dayton will play two more A-10 contests on the road next weekend when it faces Rhode Island on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on UMass on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.

Note: Dayton improves to 21-8-3 all-time against the Musketeers and has won the last 10 meetings.
