FLYERS FINISH IN 4TH AT THE 2009 A-10 ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP
April 18, 2009
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - For the second straight season the Dayton Flyers picked up a fourth-place finish as UD recorded 102 points at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship. Senior Allison Gates earned a First Team, All-Atlantic 10 selection, while senior Kate Athmer and junior Cydne Mason garnered Second Team, All-Atlantic 10 honors. This is the second consecutive season Gates and Athmer earned a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 teams. Last year Athmer was on the first team and Gates tallied second team honors. Although the Flyers finished in fourth, the 102 points amassed more than eclipsed the 81 earned by UD last year. Part of Dayton's success came from the novice boats on Saturday. UD's Second Novice 8 won their race and tallied 10 points as the Flyers defeated Rhode Island and Massachusetts with a time of 7:43.8. Meanwhile, the Novice 8 picked up 18 points after tallying a second place finish with a time of 7:06.0. The Varsity 4 picked up a third place finish and 16 points after coming in with a time of 7:57.6, just five strokes behind the lead. Dayton's Varsity 8 came in fourth with a time of 6:54.5 while the Second Varsity 8 finished in fifth with a time of 7:48.0. The Flyers' Lightweight 4 also came in fifth crossing the line at 8:44.6. The Flyer 4X came in fifth as well completing their final with a time of 8:36.2. UMass (141) beat out defending champion Rhode Island (117) by a 24-point margin. Rhode Island (117) finished in second-place and captured its only gold of the day in the Varsity 4 (7:52.1). Saint Joseph's (110) captured third-place, just seven points off the Rams, while Dayton (102) was fourth for the second straight year. Rounding out the scoring was Temple (78) in fifth, Duquesne (62) in sixth, George Washington (43) was seventh, Fordham (33) finished eighth and La Salle (16) was ninth. Dayton has one more event remaining on the 2008-09 campaign. The Flyers will head to the Dad Vail Regatta from May 8-9 in Philadelphia. |
