DAYTON WOMEN'S GOLF HEADS TO THE CAA CHAMPIONSHIP
April 17, 2008
At the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship, the Dayton Flyers have a chance to put the finishing touches on a highly successful season. UD will participate in a three-day, three round event beginning Friday, April 18 from the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va. Fans will be able to follow the tournament with live scoring at Golfstat.com. The Flyers have enjoyed a strong 2007-08 campaign thus far. UD won the Ashland Invitational and the Bellarmine Invitational earlier this spring and finished in the Top Five in seven events this season. UD will showcase a lineup of sophomores Katie Gallagher, Casey Peterson, Katie Dempsey, senior Mary Kane and freshman Julie Pouliquen. Pouliquen (80.8 stroke average), Dempsey (81.2) and Gallagher (81.9) all rank in the Top 30 among CAA golfers. For Kane, this will be the final tournament of her Flyer career. Last season, the Flyers finished 10th but with the team's overall success this season, expectations are high for UD to certainly improve. As a team UD is averaging 328 strokes per round, down from the 343 average a year ago. In their last tournament UD won the Ashland Huntington Bank Invitational by 17 strokes. After shooting a round one tournament low of 77, Dempsey fired an 83 to finish with a 160 overall score, just one stroke back from tying for first. It was Dempsey's best finish of her Flyer career. This will be the sixth season the Flyers have participated in the CAA Tournament. UD's best showing came back in the 2004 spring campaign when Dayton placed fifth overall. Other programs participating in the 2008 CAA Tournament include Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Richmond, Towson, William & Mary and Xavier. The CAA Championship will be held at the Green Course. Designed by Rees Jones, Jones Sr.'s son, and opened in 1991, the 18-hole venue is a 7,120 yard, par 72 course. |
