FLYERS HEAD TO PINEHURST FOR CAA WOMEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
April 13, 2006 PINEHURST, NC - The University of Dayton Women's Golf Team finishes up their Spring Season this weekend at the fourth annual Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Pinehurst, NC, at the Pinehurst #6 Course. UD enters its Conference Championship following a fourth place finish at the UC/UD Women's Collegiate Invitational. The low scorer for the Flyers was Junior Melissa Gaus, shooting a 166 (85-81), which was good for 10th place overall. Fellow junior Lindsey Greuter followed closely in 13th place overall shooting a 167 (84-83) over the two-round event. Gaus and Greuter have consistently been at the top of the Flyer leader board. Greuter led UD in its first event of the Spring, placing 43rd in the Big River Telephone Classic. Gaus led the Flyers in their next event, the NKU Spring Invitational, placing 56th in cold and windy conditions at the Perry Park Golf Club. In the event prior to the UC/UD Women's Collegiate Invitational, Greuter once again led the Flyers with a ninth place finish at the Bellarmine Women's Invitational while Gaus was close behind coming in 17th. Other Flyers of note entering the CAA Championships are freshmen Michelle Borchers and Danielle Hawksley as well as sophomores Mary Kane and Laura Grande. All have made positive strides this Spring and have logged significant rounds during the season. Rounding out the Flyers is senior Melissa Juve, who holds a career low round of 74. The CAA Championship is being held at one of the nation's most prestigious golfing locales in Pinehurst, NC. Home to eight courses, including the famous Pinehurst #2 (home to many championship events, including the 2005 US Open Championship), Pinehurst will host the 2006 CAA Championship on their newly refurbished Pinehurst #6 course. This course reopened in 2005 as a championship course, with new bunkers, a new strand of grass for the newly re-shaped and re-structured greens and a new tee box on the tenth hole. The last nine holes of this course are considered one of the toughest back nines anywhere. The CAA Championship runs from Friday, April 14th through Sunday, April 16th. Joining the Flyers in contention for the CAA crown are three-time Champion James Madison, Georgia State, Hofstra, UC Wilmington, Old Dominion, William & Mary, Richmond and Xavier. |
