SMITH, FLYERS IN SECOND AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE IPFW FALL CLASSIC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Thanks to a career-best round of 76 by junior Paige Smith, the Dayton Flyers are in second place after round one of the IPFW Fall Classic. Smith's previous best was an 82 at the Chicago State Invitational two weeks ago. On Monday she shot a 38 on the front and back nine and finished day one tied for second overall and one stroke behind the individual leader. UD shot a 318 overall and remain 12 strokes behind first place Butler in the six-team tournament. The Flyers have finished in either first or second in five of the last eight tournaments played dating back to last season. Smith wasn't the only Top 10 finisher for the Flyers. Junior Katie Dempsey continued her strong fall season with a 79. Dempsey battled back after a 41 on her first nine holes to fire a 38 on the back nine. Finishing tied for 13th overall was sophomore Julie Pouliquen. Pouliquen shot an 81 starting off strong with a 37 on her first nine holes of play. Just one stroke back was junior Cari DeAngelis who tallied an 82. DeAngelis also started the day well with a 39 on the front nine. Rounding out the scoring was sophomore Ellen Ciacchini with an 87. The second and final round will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from the Chestnut Hills Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. |
