DAYTON CAPTURES ASHLAND INVITATIONAL FOR 2ND SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP

ASHLAND, Ohio - For the second time this spring the Dayton Flyers are tournament champions. Backed by a second-place overall finish from sophomore Katie Dempsey, the Flyers won the Ashland Huntington Bank Invitational by 17 strokes. UD shot a 336 in the second round after tallying a 316 in round one to pick up its second tournament title in the previous three appearances. During the 2007-08 season the Flyers have finished in the Top Five in seven of the 10 tournaments participated. After shooting a round one tournament low of 77, Dempsey fired an 83 to finish with a 160 overall score, just one stroke back from tying for first. It's Dempsey's best finish of her Flyer career. Two Flyers tied for fourth among individuals as freshman Julie Pouliquen and sophomore Katie Gallagher each totaled a 164. Pouliquen shot rounds of 78 and 86 while Gallagher added an 80 and 84. Not far behind in a tie for seventh was sophomore Casey Peterson. She too shot a second round 84 after carding an 81 in the first. Senior Mary Kane and freshman Heather Grant were the fifth and sixth Flyer golfers to place in the Top Nine. Kane rebounded from an 86 in round one to tally an 83 in the second. Grant played consistently and shot an 84 and 85 in the invitational. Freshman Megan Keating tied for 18th with rounds of 83 and 89 while freshman Ellen Ciacchini added an 86 and a 90. Rounding out the scoring was sophomore Paige Smith who carded scores of 86 and 91, sophomore Elaine English with back-to-back rounds of 89 and sophomore Cari DeAngelis who sliced 10 strokes off her first round score with an 85 in the second round. UD now prepares for its final and most important test of the season. The Flyers head to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on April 18-20. The CAA Championship will be held at The Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va. |
