FLYERS LEND A COMMUNITY HELPING HAND
March 1, 2006 It's all about lasting impressions. As the UD women's basketball team played its final home game of the season last Friday night, the UD Division of Athletics entertained nearly 40 youngsters from the YMCA of Greater Dayton. Thirty-five UD student-athletes were on-hand to interact with kids at the game, sat with them in the stands and enjoyed pizza while watching the Flyers play the Duquesne Dukes in women's hoops. "We were very excited to have the youth from the YMCA get the opportunity to interact with our student-athletes," said Megan Pease, UD's compliance coordinator who helped organize the event. "In fact, I was back at the YMCA Monday morning for their after school program and that's all the kids could talk about was being at the women's basketball game Friday." The YMCA of Greater Dayton is one organization the student-athletes at UD have developed a relationship with. The Flyers work hand-in-hand with the YMCA to get involved in a number of their community service efforts. UD student-athletes work at the YNDC (YMCA Neighborhood Development Center) at Crosspointe twice a week, every week for their after school program. While there, the Flyers assist the YNDC advisors in areas such as Judo, nutrition classes, and homework time. "The kids had a great time on Friday," said Pease. "They loved hanging out with our student-athletes and getting to watch the game. It's an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives." |
