PHILADELPHIA - Visiting Dayton used a solid defensive effort in support of 21 points and 11 rebounds from Nikki Oakland to secure its eighth consecutive victory, 60-50 at Drexel in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

The Flyers (8-2) are now tied for the third longest active winning streak in the nation with eight straight wins as Oakland finished with her third double-double in the last four contests.

Dayton held homestanding Drexel to only 32.8 percent (19-of-58) shooting from the field while also holding a commanding 43-31 lead in rebounding as well as 36-18 advantage at points in the paint.

A total of three Flyers reached double figures in scoring including freshman Kristin Daugherty who scored 10 of her 12 points and seven rebounds in the second half. Senior Brittany Holterman added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists of her own for Dayton which shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the field overall.

Sophomore Kendel Ross (1-for-4) and senior Kiki Lund (2-for-6) combined for three treys on the day as UD extended its streak to 197 consecutive games with a made three-point shot dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, which leads the Atlantic 10 Conference. Ross finished with nine points and eight rebounds as Lund had six points and five assists.

The Flyer defense clamped down on the Dragons in the first half as it allowed just 19 points on 7-for-23 (.304) shooting from the field including a stretch of 5:21 when Dayton held Drexel scoreless and went from down 10-11 to up 21-13 en route to a 29-19 halftime lead.

In contrast, Dayton connected on 12-of-27 shots from the field including back-to-back three point shots during the 11-2 run that gave the Flyers the lead for good. UD also dominated with interior scoring as it held an 18-2 advantage at points in the paint and an 11-0 lead in second chance points due to a 22-10 advantage in rebounding. Nikki Oakland tallied 12 first half points while Kendel Ross came off the bench for seven points and a team-best seven rebounds to help the Flyers build a 10-point advantage at the half.

Nikki Oakland continued her solid play into the second half with seven of Dayton's first nine points in a span of only 5:18, but Drexel kept pace behind eight points in the first 10:14 to keep it a 10-point Flyer lead at 44-34 with 9:24 left in regulation. Then the Flyers turned up the defense and broke its own scoreless stretch of 2:39 with six points over the same period of time from Kristin Daugherty. The freshman's rally combined with a scoreless streak of 5:14 from the Dragons, put Dayton ahead by 15 on its way to a 60-50 victory. The Flyers will take the next week off to focus on end of semester exams before playing host to Wright State on Sunday.
