Loyola chipped away at the Dayton advantage and tied the score at 15-all with 11:41 remaining in the half on a layup by Marquise Hanser. However, the Flyers responded with a 9-2 run over the next 4:34 including five points from Holterman and two each by Jennifer Strong and Kiki Lund. Loyola fought back again and took a 24-17 Dayton lead down to a 24-23 advantage just 2:13 later, but another 6-0 run from the Flyers gave UD a 30-23 advantage with 2:57 left in the first half. The momentum would swing back to the Ramblers again who closed the margin to 35-32 at halftime. Holterman led all scorers with 14 points in the first half on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. McCloskey came off the bench to tally nine points for the Ramblers who held Dayton without a made three-point shot in the first 20 minutes of play. The lead would trade back and forth three times to begin the second half before Marques Hanser drilled a trey with 13:51 on the clock to go ahead 43-41. The basket would put Loyola ahead for good as the Ramblers led by as many as nine in the second half. Dayton closed the gap to three on a trey by Kathy Guin with 59 seconds remaining and after a turnover by the Ramblers, Holterman made a fast break basket to pull Dayton within a point at 67-66 just eight seconds later. However, a 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line from the Ramblers in the final 30 seconds allowed Loyola-Chicago to secure a 73-69 victory. |
