DAYTON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO NO. 10 OHIO STATE
Dec. 4, 2004
DAYTON, OH -- - Cara Wright scored a career-high 16 and added 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, but the University of Dayton women's basketball team fell 75-42 to No. 11 (AP)/No. 10 (Coaches) Ohio State, Saturday in front of 2,103 fans at UD Arena. Dayton falls to 3-3 on the year. Caity Matter led all-scorers with 19 for OSU, which improves to 7-1. Dayton held the Buckeyes to a season-low in points versus unranked teams, but the Flyers could only get to the 42-point mark as Ohio State blocked 11 shots, including eight by Jessica Davenport, who added 16 points. Dayton fell behind early before Angela Cape's first career three-point attempt was good to tie the game 5-5 at the 15:46 mark. A basket by Jennifer Strong gave UD a 7-5 lead on the next possession before OSU's Stephanie Blanton and Kim Winburn answered with threes as the Buckeyes built a 25-10 lead. The Flyers responded with a 15-6 run of their own, highlighted by six points from Wright to pull within six at 31-25 with 1:35 lead before the break. But Davenport answered with yet another leaning bank shot from the low block and a bucket to close the half gave the Buckeyes at 35-25 lead. Wright scored 13 points on five-of-seven shooting in the first half to go with six rebounds. Davenport connected on six-of-seven to lead Ohio State with 12. The second half opened with Dayton native Brandi Hoskins' first points of the night for OSU to start a 16-3 run as the Buckeyes took control. Hoskins scored all of her 13 points in the second, as Ohio State shot 54.2 percent in the second stanza. Strong finished with seven points for UD, while Cape added three and five rebounds, including three on the offensive end. The Flyers out-rebounded Ohio State, 33-28, and have not been out-rebounded this season. Ohio State's only lower point total came in the Preseason NIT final against No. 3 Notre Dame, a 66-62 loss. The Flyers will host the Irish on Thursday, December 9. Dayton's last win over a ranked team came November 28, 2001 at home versus No. 25 Maryland. The Flyers played a Top 10 opponent for the first time since a December 30, 2002 loss to No. 10 Minnesota. The Flyers will visit nearby Fairborn, Ohio for Tuesday's game against Wright State. Tip-off for the 30th meeting between the Flyers and Raiders is at 7:00 p.m. at the Nutter Center. Dayton leads the all-time series 26-3. |
